【Co-Creation with Robots】Construction Process of the "Sand Molding + Thermoplastic Pellet" 3D Printing Device & Review of the 2025 Southeast University-RMIT International Robotic Construction Pioneer Camp


From October 28 to November 12, 2025, the AIROBUILD International Robotic Construction Pioneer Workshopjointly organized by the School of Architecture at Southeast University (SEU) and RMIT Universitywas successfully held at SEUs Sipailou Campus. Led by Dr. Dasong Wang and Associate Professor Hao Hua of SEUs Computational Design & Fabrication Lab, together with Professors Roland Snooks and Marc Gibson of RMITs Tectonic Formation Lab, the program established a platform for cross-national joint teaching and advanced research collaboration.

Focusing on the theme "AIROBUILD-AI×Robot×Build", participants explored AI-driven generative design, swarm intelligence, robotic fabrication, and emerging architectural construction systems.

The workshop brought together faculty and students from SEU, RMIT, ETH Zurich, Georgia Tech, the University of Pennsylvania, and Soochow University. Teachers and students from many renowned institutions in the fields of architecture and computational design, such as Soochow University, participated. They conducted systematic theoretical workshops, algorithmic experiments and construction practices on cutting-edge topics such as AI-driven design, robot manufacturing technology and future building construction systems.

A major highlight of the three-week program was the successful completion of the worlds first architectural prototype integrating large-scale sand binder-jetting with robotic thermoplastic pellet additive manufacturing. Developed collaboratively at SEUs International Built Environment Innovation Lab, the prototype represents a breakthrough in hybrid large-scale additive construction and demonstrates the deep integration of generative AI, computational tectonics, material behavior modeling, and robotic fabrication.

The final review on November 11 showcased work from 24 graduate students, followed by the AIROBUILD International Symposium on November 12, featuring scholars from ETH Zurich, RMIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and Georgia Tech. The symposium expanded the workshops academic impact through discussions on generative design, robotic manufacturing, and intelligent construction systems.

After the defense, the relevant teams from both universities engaged in in-depth exchanges and sharing regarding the laboratory's achievements and research methods. The participating guests included Professor Zhang Tong, the dean of the School of Architecture at Southeast University, and Professor Zhu Yuan, the vice dean, among others. Professor Li Biao from the School of Architecture at Southeast University first introduced the research progress of the Architectural Computing and Application Laboratory in areas such as generative design and robot construction, systematically presenting the experimental foundation and representative achievements of SEU in algorithm design and cross-scale intelligent manufacturing.

Professor Roland Snooks, the head of the RMIT Construction Forming Laboratory, then introduced the typical projects and methodologies of the Construction Forming Laboratory (Tectonic Formation Lab) in the fields of complex geometric generation, material construction experiments, and robot manufacturing, showcasing its continuous exploration and innovative path in the international field of digital construction.

On November 12th, the AIROBUILD workshop held an international lecture titled "Digital Empowerment and the Frontiers of Intelligent Construction". Several scholars from RMIT, UPenn, Georgia Tech, and Southeast University were invited to share the latest developments in areas such as generative design, material intelligence, robotic construction, and mixed reality construction. This lecture provided interdisciplinary and high-density academic perspectives for the students of the two universities, further expanding their understanding and thinking about the future development of intelligent construction.

"AIROBUILD" is formed by integrating artificial intelligence (AI), robots (Robot) and construction (Build). It is an important innovative practice in the collaboration of intelligent construction education and research between Southeast University and RMIT. Through cross-border joint teaching, cross-university construction experiments and international academic exchanges, the work camp not only deepened the cooperation foundation between the two universities in the fields of digital construction and generative design, but also provided new methodological inspirations and research paths for the future development of architecture in the era of artificial intelligence and robots.
